Busy Boy

I have been a very busy dog lately. I have been to Therapy, and started Acupuncture again with Dr. Phillips - which makes me very relaxed...

I have been on walks to the park and hung out with all my friends....

I have spent time with all my kids ......

Had my humans push me in my cool cart.....

My Buddy AJ and I spent some time together......

.... and tonight at the park I met some new friends Henry and Quinn. Henry was very curious about my shaved spot on my leg and the fact that I am blind. He was trying very hard to come up with all the ways I can know where I am even though I can't see. Quinn was checking the score on the cell phone for the Pacers game and took the time to pet me and stroke my fur before we left. I hope we run into them again sometime.

Working Out

I had to go to hydro-therapy again to help get my back legs strong and train my brain to keep lifting my foot. It was harder this time because they made me go longer and added more pool toys to keep me from cheating and resting my foot.

AP made a little movie to show how hard I was working. If you look closely you can see me still trying to cheat a little.

It is good to have friends

AP here:
We ran into Tonka's human friend Marie the other morning and she had not seen him for about two months and was very happy to see him up and walking. Hopefully soon his stamina will be back up to where we can go further and "see" our other human friends that walk in the mornings.
His recovery has been amazing and I credit the great care he received and continues to receive from his doctors and therapists. His therapists ROCK!
I also have to give credit to his wonderful friends both human and canine that have helped us at the park getting in and out of the truck and around the field. He is such a social guy and being able to go to the park and hangout with his friends has really helped him mentally. He also tends to lift his feet higher when he at the park which I would guess is part adrenaline and part uneven terrain.
Here are some pictures of Tonka and his buddies.

I Need a Ride

Well my new ride is not working out. The saddle that my back end sits in is pressing on something and is not only uncomfortable but has made me slide backwards a bit. AP is very disappointed as she was counting on the cart to allow me to get back to some normalcy. I am back to really dragging my foot and have fallen quite a few times. I am really tired of not being able to do what I want. I have therapy next week and hopefully they can get me back to New Years Day status.AP is going to contact the cart people and see if there is anything we can do. It would be nice to be able to walk all the way to the park again.

Be Still My Beating Heart

I went for a long ride today with AP and her Dad. We went all the way to Leesburg VA to the LifeCenter and Chesapeake Veterinary Cardiology Associates to see Dr. Peckens.
https://www.cvcavets.com/doctor_directory/neal-peckens/

His assistant Heather met with AP to take my history and she was nice enough to keep me from hitting my head on the exam table. Dr. Peckens came in and listened to my heart, and listened to my heart, and listened to my heart and when he was done he asked AP if I had ever been diagnosed with a heart murmur. AP told him that the very first Doctor I ever had diagnosed that but everyone since had said no so it was thought that I had outgrown it (we dogs do that). He said he definitely heard one and told her he thought I had a PDA but we would know for sure with an echo cardiogram. He asked if I would be OK up on a table and AP told him that I am not a fan of heights and about the time I got up on the couch by accident and was scared to come down. They all agreed to try me up on the table but if I got stressed we could do the test with me standing.

We went into the other room and Heather and Dr. Peckens lifted me up and put me on a table that had a panel in the middle. The panel comes out leaving a hole for the Doctor to put a device called a transducer through to move around on my chest. They put electrodes on me and then used ultrasound and the transducer to put images of the inside of my heart on the screen of the echo cardiogram machine. I was a really good boy and stayed real still - except for the few times I tried to push some buttons on the machine.

Dr. Peckens and Heather

What does this button do?

Let me roll the ball.
He showed AP and Dad the images in color to display the problem with my heart. It is called a PDA or Patent Ductus Arterious and is congenital which means I was born with it. Most PDA's are caught early in puppies and taken care of. If it not caught 50% of puppies with it never make it past 1year -so I have beaten the odds so far. Basically I have a hole that was supposed to close when I was born and it didn't so now I have an over circulation that has made my heart get large. The other day my heart went wonky and into Atrial Fibrillation and my heart was beating really, really fast which is dangerous. Thanks to the medicine I am taking my heart rate is back to normal and has gone back into a normal rhythm so I am at low risk of heart failure until they can fix me. The Doctors at CVCA all meet at a big thing called rounds and discuss all the cases they have seen and put their heads together for the best fix. Tomorrow at the round thing they will talk about me and the best option to help me. I am hoping that option is the amplatz ductal occluder because that surgery will allow me to be up and around quickly and they won’t have to open up my chest. It's a plug that they can use to stop up the hole and my heart can get back t normal size. There is a handout on CVCA's website that explains the problem and the solution if you want to read it https://www.cvcavets.com/diseases-conditions/patent-ductus-arteriosus/

Right now I am a very happy boy because I can now go for a walk as long as I don't get carried away. AP is happy because my heart is not all wonky right now and we know what the problem is.

I Want Out

It snowed a lot more last night and AP had to shovel the driveway and clean off the cars before we went for our morning walk. I thought that was completely unfair. I wanted to get out front in all the action so I politely knocked on the door to let her know I was there..

Hey!

Hello!
When knocking "politely" didn't work I decided I was trapped and tried to dig my way out.

Help!

I'm trapped
Since no-one seemed to cared that I might die here- it was time to try and chew my way through.

Can't get a grip
Somehow I ended up in trouble for just trying to get free - humans are totally unfair!

Bissell Most Valuable Pet (MVP)

AP is trying to win some money for my rescue. She entered me in a contest run by the Bissell Vacumn company and first prize would be $10,000 for AGPR. They could sure use that money to help more Tonka dogs like me. The contest is 12 weeks long and AP will send them a picture every week to put up on the Internet on the Bissell website.

Today is the first day to vote for me for week 1. If you would please help, you can register and vote at  http://bissell.promo.eprize.com/mvpcontest/registration.html

If you can help out would you please vote for me- my entry number is 212 this week. You can search for me by name or by the number 212 once you are logged in. There is another dog named Tonka but I am the big white one all curled up sleeping like an angel in the picture.

If you follow my blog then you know sometimes I am not quite so angelic :)

You can vote every day, once a day for me and I would really appreciate it.
Thanks again

Tonka and Auggie

I got to play with Auggie at the beach and his humans Lorri and Linds. We had a great time but it was very windy. Then we had breakfast at the bandstand and walked around window shopping until it started raining really hard. hopefully we can get together again soon.

Christmas Parade

I just found out I am going to be in the Middleburg Christmas Parade on December 4th. This is the parade that AGPR participates in every year. Last year we had 40 Pyrenees walking down the main street of Middelburg. This year we are shooting for 60 which will be an amazing sight to behold. It is even more amazing that all the dogs are rescues that AGPR has saved and adopted out. Middleburg is a very quaint small town and a great place to visit year round but at Christmas they really do it up. So if you want to see 3 tons of Pyrs (which is what 60 dogs would roughly work out to) in a great parade and enjoy a day in small town America then join us in Middelburg on the 4th.

From the Middleburg Calendar of Events:
http://www.middleburgonline.com/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=789

At 11:00 a.m. the Middleburg Hunt takes to the streets creating a spectacular site as horses, riders in red coats and dozens of hounds come through the town. Immediately following the Hunt, the Middleburg Christmas Parade features a unique assortment of floats, marching bands, local community groups, antique fire trucks, and a variety of animals including horses, llamas and dogs. Santa brings up the rear riding on a beautiful horse drawn coach. Throughout the day there are hayrides, choir performances, the Garden Club's Christmas Flower & Greens Show and the Craft Show. Visitors enjoy shopping and dining in Middleburg's shops and restaurants.

The Language of Tonka

AP here -People always ask me how Tonka gets around and I always answer "I tell him where to go". Now this is a true statement but Tonka also does an incredible job of navigating all on his own and once we have been somewhere he remembers it quite well. I got to thinking just how many commands we use with him and came up with this list of words that Tonka understands. I have probably left some out but it is a start....

Hi Looking For a Good Home

Hi my name is Liam and I am a very smart, very lovable 8 month old (Marrema possible Pyr mix) puppy looking for his forever home. I have been staying with my friend Tonka and his 2 humans AP and CM for a few days. Like my friend Tonka I was born blind with my retinas detached but I do sense light and dark (so I sleep all through the night). I love to sleep on my bed in the bedroom with people and I don’t even care if you snore. I will also sleep in my crate if I have to. I will go to the door and wait to go out when I need to potty and am learning to use the doggie door but Tonka is much bigger than me and his door is a little heavy for me right now. I will not get as big as Tonka, he is huge like a truck and I am his Italian equivalent so I will be more like an aerodynamic racecar.

My routine right now is out to potty first thing in the morning and if it is really early then Tonka and I will come back in and go back to bed for awhile. Once the household is awake we have an early morning play session with Tonka and the humans or a long walk (we have 2 feet of snow right now so walking is a little tough). Then it’s time for breakfast, AP says that since I am a working breed we should always walk before breakfast. She says I should have a job to do and in a pack we would go find breakfast first so that’s why we walk first. She has all kinds of crazy ideas like that, but I like to walk so it’s OK. I don't think I am horrible on a leash but I am learning that there are rules to walking with people and I am catching on quick. After breakfast we all go out to go potty and Tonka and I usually sneak in a little wrestle session and then I lay around and play with my toys until it is time to either go in my house or if the humans are home I find a quiet spot to nap. I am crate trained and I love my crate (house) it is my safe place and when I am in it AP says I should be left alone since that is my safe place.

I am learning commands like sit and wait along with straight, turn around, left and right. I already know the important commands like No, and Off. AP says I am more aware of my surrounding than Tonka so I don’t bump in to lots of things and therefore don’t need constant commands like he does. I tend to use my nose like a sweeper moving left and right to map out what’s around me where Tonka keeps his head up high. AP also says Tonka is "special" and not as quick to adapt to a new area as me.

I love Chicken Strips and Bill Jacs so that is what we use for training and since I am a skinny little boy and trying to gain some weight it works well. I like to play with toys and like Tonka my goal is to remove all stuffing and squealers so heavy duty toys work best and last longest. The Tuffies Toys are rated for chewers and all the 7 and above will last for a while http://www.tuffietoys.com/. I also like to play with the Kong toys like the Wubba and the treat bone. I don’t play fetch but I love to play with my wiggle giggle ball and if you roll it around near me I will chase the sound and pounce on it. I am a puppy so when I get very wound up in play mode I sometimes try to get a little mouthy but I never bite down and am learning that my mouth is only for toys.

I love a good belly rub and will roll over a bit whenever a human walks in the room to let them know they should stop and give me a scratch and some attention. Since I spent the first part of my life in a barn on a farm I am just learning the world outside the barn and am a bit shy in new situations but warm up quickly. I have a healthy curiosity of things and with patience will explore and figure things out on my own.

In the afternoon it's outside to play and another walk. I have been hanging out with Tonka and his friends at the dog park and am learning to come on recall from a distance which I am really good at if there is clapping or a squeaky involved. AP says I am a smart boy and I just need consistency which my forever human could provide for me. She says people don't understand that having a blind dog is the same as a sighted dog you just have to lay a slightly different foundation with them as a puppy. She also says that everything that happens during the day is an opportunity for a puppy to learn so training is really an all the time event.

In the evening we have dinner and Tonka and I eat in separate places so there is no misunderstanding about food. I need to gain some weight so I need to concentrate on just my bowl and feel secure that no one is going to take it away. Then we go out for potty time and wrestle a little and we are supposed to come back in when AP calls us which I am getting the hang of especially when there is a chicken strip waiting if I come right in and sit. Tonka is no longer a little puppy so he likes to just chill and chew on his Nylabones or lay around in the evening but I like to get out all my toys and play a little. AP and I play a game called left/right with my toys and new games called down and wait. Once I have settled down a bit Tonka and I get a frozen Kong that has a little peanut butter in it and he and I work on those. Sometimes we swap and I think I get the best end of the deal since I am little and can reach in the hole further and get what he has missed.

When it’s time for bed Tonka and I go out to go potty one last time for the night and then come in and get a chicken strip. We get one last belly rub and Tonka goes to sleep by the door and I trot off to CM’s bedroom to curl up on my dogbed.
AP says whoever adopts me will be getting a very special friend.
